In the gas separation field, polymer membranes are now well recognised for air separationhydrogen purification, and, progressively, natural gas processing. Polymer membranes have conjointly developed as a number one technology to desalinise water (e.g., reverse osmosis) and square measure being discovered for energy generation in applications like reverse electrodialysis and pressure retarded osmosis. Additionally, efforts are under way to develop additional applications of membranes for water purification, such as forward osmosis and membrane-assisted capacitive deionization. Dense metal membranes are a well-built technology for the production of high-purity hydrogen. The carnal mechanism of hydrogen transport across metal films—dissociation of molecular hydrogen, diffusion of interstitial atomic hydrogen, and subsequent recombinative desorption of molecular hydrogen—means that metal membranes can have very high selectivities for hydrogen transport relative to other gases. We define current experimental and theoretical trends in the development of metal alloy membranes for hydrogen purification in practical, chemically robust processes.
